Erased, Not Replaced:
Our Public Statement on The Call In
For over six years, The Call In was an award-winning, Black-led diversion programme supporting primarily Black and racially minoritised young people in East Central Bristol who had been arrested for drug-related offending.
The programme offered an alternative to the criminal legal system, recognising the wider contexts of racial disproportionality, exploitation and the lasting harm of criminalisation.
Although nationally recognised and celebrated as innovative practice, when The Call In was paused, there was no visible senior leadership advocacy to protect its legacy or support its continuation.
Our statement, Erased, Not Replaced, calls on Avon and Somerset Police for recognition, transparency and accountability regarding current diversion provision and its impact for Black young people and the communities experiencing the greatest racial disproportionality.

To help reduce homelessness and to tackle its systemic causes, BSWN has conducted research with The Runnymede Trust and the Mwanzo Project to help understand non-policing solutions to homelessness in Bristol.
